The story is set in the 9th century The film focuses on the life and times of Chola Prince Arulmozhivarman (Jayam Ravi) who became famous and was the most powerful King of his time within South India.
Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan (Karthi), an ebullient warrior prince from Vannar tells the story of his exciting journey through his own Chola empire.
Queen Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) who is called Mandakini Devi, the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar (R. Sarathkumar), is on a quest to take down Aditya Karikalan (Vikram) and assist her husband in gaining the throne.
Arulmozhivarman uncovers plots to thwart the government and numerous other secrets concerning Nandini and the other ministers. Vandiyadevan is assigned the task of bringing Arulmozhivarman to Sri Lanka to save the throne.
